Term Description
Service of Process Service of process is the procedure employed to give legal notice to a person (e.g. defendant) or entity (e.g. business) of a court or administrative body's exercise to enable that person to respond to the proceeding before the court, body or other tribunal.  The process of fulfilling a serve.
Process Process is the general term for the legal document by which a lawsuit is started and the court asserts its jurisdiction over the parties and the controversy.  It is the notice that is furnished by delivering a set of court documents (called "process") to the person to be served.
Service (Serve) The act of delivering a writ or summons upon someone; "he accepted service of the subpoena".
Affidavit Is a formal sworn statement of fact, signed by the declarant (who is called the affiant or deponent) and witnessed (as to the veracity of the affiant's signature) by a taker of oaths, such as a notary public.  Affidavit of Service, also called a Proof of Service, is a signed document provided to you by your process server upon completion of serving your documents. Proof of Service states when, where, and who was served.
Client Someone requesting a serve (e.g. lawyer, paralegal).
Proof of Serve Documents the details of the serve completed by the server (i.e. Affidavit).

Process Server The individual who performs the serve.
